My Thoughts on How Writing Has Changed Me

Writing is a powerful habit, apply it strategically to improve your life, and your life will improve

I am someone who cherishes life and constantly seeks out my purpose in living. I look for the meaning that would allow me to contribute, not only to myself but to others, and to the community. The meaning must be something that I am passionate about and can guide me along to live a happier life.

It is easier said than done because convincing myself to embark on a purpose to achieve something is not straightforward. You see, I am a champion procrastinator. I can live a day without doing anything but keeping my couch warm and my TV hot. That is how my days in the future would be, and honestly, I am pretty afraid to live like that.

One thing I enjoy passionately is writing. But I don’t know where this will lead me. Hence for a long time, I never wanted to explore. Perhaps I was procrastinating, or maybe I was afraid of the unknown; nevertheless, at some point, I knew I had to start. It is only when I let go that I begin to discover things I never knew. Through writing, I realise I can write prose, poems, short-form and sometimes essays. And I seem to do okay with it.

I have also discovered to write meaningful stuff, one needs experience and inspiration. To have experience, you have to do it. To get inspiration, you need to dream it.

Great writers write about their interesting life experiences and share their stories first-hand. These types of writers are genuinely respectable. One such writer I know of is Victor Frankl, the author of the international bestseller “Man’s Search for Meaning”.

Writers who do not have their own exciting stories to tell could borrow stories of others to illustrate. That, perhaps, is the reason why the term “copywriters” was invented, even though it holds a different meaning now. There is nothing wrong with writing other people’s stories, as such writing can be inspiring too. You only need to note whatever they say; they are telling you stories or even habits they observed of other people, not theirs.

I want to write about my own story, my own experience, and my own habits. I want to be authentic, but at the same time, I also don’t want to write about my empty life, my lack of talent and my many failures. It is embarrassing.

It is in that spirit I begin to discover my purpose. In the months that I have been writing self-improvement, the positive encouragement I received from fellow writers motivated me to be a better version of myself.

To have things to write about, I now actively find things to do to better myself. I have to spend more time seeking out the meaningful pieces in my otherwise mundane life, and I look forward to writing down my experience and extracting the beautiful part that would make my life a colourful masterpiece, one day at a time.

Writing isn’t just a form of expression; it is also a form of meditation — to connect with oneself and to discover one’s purpose. It is a form of encouragement that pushes you to want to do more and write more. The more you write, the more people you will inspire, and the more positive your world becomes. Writing can be a self-reinforcing cycle, it is entirely up to you how you want to harness this energy, but I can assure you it can do wonders for your life.

Through writing, I have been able to organize my thoughts and ideas, clarify my values and goals, and gain a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. Writing has also allowed me to communicate more effectively with others, whether through professional emails, personal letters, or creative writing.

Writing has been a valuable source of solace and stress relief during difficult times. Whether I'm journaling about my emotions, writing poetry or essays, or simply jotting down a to-do list, the act of writing helps me feel more centered and in control. It has improved my mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. It has allowed me to explore and express myself in new and meaningful ways, and I believe it has the power to do the same for you too if you take the time to engage with it.
