Very soon, there will be a new software in our company that incorporates the latest ChatGPT function to help fellow employees to write reports and proposals. The announcement was received with much fanfare and anticipation, but a question floats among the different groups of employees within the organisation—Are you ready to embrace it?
I have read a few articles on Medium.com regarding a number of its publications not accepting articles written with the help of ChatGPT for reasons that it lacks authenticity. I have also read many writers coming out to support such a stand and reject the use of ChatGPT or any form of AI tools in their writing.
I have been through the early era when I have to write with only pen and paper. Back then, I used to have a pen pal to whom I wrote handwritten letters every time. When email was invented, I refused to use it to type my pen pal's letters because I felt at that time it lacked sincerity. Nothing beats handwritten messages. Yeah, I had my pride but after some time, I found myself swallowing back my words. I U-turned on my principles and overturned that excuse because I didn’t want to be left behind. Now, I can’t even remember the last time I handwritten an essay.
The same story goes for using Spell and Grammar Checkers and Thesaurus. These are a bunch of AI tools invented to help us write better. I rejected these tools initially because using them would alter my writing style, but gave it enough time, and I found myself swallowing down my pride to embrace it anyway.
We have to face reality. In this battle, it is not a matter of principles but a matter of time. In this technologically advanced society, the day we resist change will be the day we become obsolete. One must adopt an open mindset to embrace constant change to remain relevant. To thrive, you don’t have to be among the best; you only need to be among the first. The later you change, the more you will fall behind.
Be among the first to adopt disruptive technology, position yourself as the trendsetter, harness the potential to discover new opportunities and establish yourself as a leader within the newly discovered field. An open attitude encourages an innovative mindset which fosters a culture of continuous learning and growth, enabling you or your publication to stay ahead in an ever-evolving landscape. When you are at the forefront of a disruptive change, you will have the power to positively disrupt yourself and your communities. You can leverage technologies to improve your writing experiences, explore new boundaries, discover new opportunities and create new business models.
