Today is the day we celebrate Teachers’ Day in Singapore, a moment to pause and honour the people who dedicate their lives to shaping the minds and hearts for our future generations.
Many of us carry with us memories of teachers who left deep impressions on our lives. Take, for instance, the story of my history teacher from my secondary school years. He was a passionate history teacher. He has never taught history as dates and facts to be memorised, but as living stories that revealed the struggles, hopes, and dreams of people long before us. His energy filled the classroom—every lesson felt like a journey through time. Even decades later, I can still recall the fire in his eyes when he spoke about the courage of those who shaped our world. I remember not only the knowledge he shared, but also the passion he modelled—a passion that inspired many of us to pursue our dreams and live a life of lifelong learning.
Equally moving is the story of my math teacher, a teacher who quietly made countless sacrifices for her students. She would stay back after school to give extra lessons to those who were struggling, often skipping her own lunch so that no child would be left behind. Beyond academics, she took the time to listen, to encourage, and to guide her students through personal challenges. Over the years, this bond grew so strong that even after thirty years, we still gather annually as a class to celebrate with her. Our reunions are not simply about reminiscing, but about honouring our teacher who went the extra mile and became a lifelong friend.
Experiences like these remind us that teaching is never just about textbooks. It is about planting seeds of inspiration, nurturing curiosity, and shaping values that endure far beyond school years. Teachers do not just prepare students for exams; they prepare them for life. Their influence echoes across generations, building a stronger society and a more compassionate future.
As we celebrate Teachers’ Day, let us offer our heartfelt gratitude to every teacher, past and present, who has chosen this noble path. Your patience, dedication, and belief in your students are what make the difference between simply learning and truly growing.
And as the school holidays begin today, we wish every students—our future generations—a restful and joyful break. May you spend this time recharging, discovering new passions, and cherishing moments with loved ones. Return to school ready to learn, remembering always the teachers who guide you along the way.
To all teachers out there, a very big thank you and have a Happy Teachers’ Day!
