A journey to strengthen the bond between a father and son
My wife and I had the opportunity to visit Finland last month to see our son in Kajaani, who is there on a summer internship exchange programme. It was an opportunity for us to take a break to see the captivating land where the sun never sets during the summer months and also a chance to strengthen the bond with our son.
Finland undoubtedly holds a special place in my mind. I had visited Finland a couple of times prior, so it was not unfamiliar to me. Nestled in the northernmost reaches of Europe, this remarkable country offers a multitude of wonders for travellers.
My son first informed me about this offer for him to take part in the internship exchange programme in Finland two months prior. At that time, he wasn’t keen, citing three months was too long to be away from his girlfriend. I didn’t hear from him after, and I thought it could have been water under the bridge, so I didn’t pester him. However, a week after that, my son came back to say he had a discussion with the person in charge and accepted the offer for the internship in Finland. He was to depart three weeks later. It was a mad rush with the logistics and travel arrangements, but it was well worth the hassle. He flew off in late May to a faraway country for the first time without his parents. He is only 19 yo.
