Episode 3: Building Confidence
An exclusive weekend series about the writer’s journey and struggles
Begin and don’t stop
I chanced on writing only mid-last year, it triggered my interest to find something different to pursue in life. I researched deeper, and an idea blossomed in my mind; What if I could pursue my writing passion online? I could write something that people might want to read.
I was lost then, guided only by my passion for writing. I have written a phrase that I constantly draw my strength. It is something I find guided me well throughout my life, especially when I felt weak and did not know if I should do what I wanted.
We don’t always have to begin with the end in mind, the most important thing is to “begin” and “don’t stop”, it would still be a life worth living for, even if it ends with nothing.
The ability to write well, to know what to write, and to write consistently is just the tip of the iceberg on the road to success. What I have learnt early in my writing journey is writing has only three basic elements; “Logos”, “Pathos”, and “Ethos.”
At first, you write with “Logos”. Using facts and figures in your writing to build trust with your readers. Then you progress to “Pathos”. Adding emotions and feelings into your text creates a connection with your subscribers. Only when you have mastered the art of the two would you focus on developing your “Ethos”. This is your persona, representing who you are and what you stand for.
What your readers like to read about isn’t simply your writing; they want to read you. What truly drives your subscribers’ growth is your “Ethos”, your confidence and what you stand for. Whether you are writing travel logs, opinion pieces or other subject matters, you must appear confident in whatever you write. You have to write with authority. Avoid using words like “I think” or “I guess”. Use firm language and sentences.

In the last two episodes, I have shown you how I overcame my writing struggles and the secret to being consistent. In this episode, I wish to share the tricks I used to build confidence.
