Enjoying the Simple Pleasures of Working from Home
WFH allows us to balance our work and home life more efficiently
Today is Work From Home (WFH) Friday, not because I had wanted it but because most of my colleagues had announced their intention to work from home today. Many other departments have also chosen today as their family day, getting free tickets from the company to spend a day with their family at Universal Studio Singapore.
While I could have gone to work, the thought of being in the office all alone made me think again. So, I went with the flow to work from home instead.
An advantage of working from home is that I save time from commuting. Instead of spending time travelling to the office, I can spend it on a good workout which is a better way to start off the day. So I woke up and got myself out of the house for a morning walk. The weather was pleasant, and the morning air was refreshing. I enjoyed getting out to take in the sights and sounds of the city waking up to a brand new day.
I didn’t have a lot of time to walk a long distance, and the route I took had only lasted slightly over 5 km. Still, it got my heart pumping, and I was home before 8 am, all ready to indulge in a nice shower to refresh my body and mind. The warm shower helped zest up my spirit for the day.
How best to begin a working day than to make myself a cup of hot coffee? The aroma of freshly brewed coffee is one of the most comforting smells to me, it eased my senses and readied me for the busy day ahead. I enjoy taking my time sipping on the hot brew, savouring the flavour and the warmth. Coffee is an essential dope that pumps up my energy. One of the key reasons I name my publication Coffee Times.
Working from home means having plenty of zoom or skype calls. For internal meetings, I prefer to have the video on, while for external ones, I rather use the audio only. The reason is simply so that I don’t have to put on a shirt and tie.
Time passes quickly with meetings and emails. In a blink, it was already lunchtime. Normally I wouldn’t have the luxury of having lunch with my wife during work days. But the benefit of remote work does come in handy, especially for people with family, as it allows us to balance our work and home life more efficiently and saves us a significant amount of time and money.
My wife had prepared a bowl of delicious homemade noodles for me to enjoy. We sat down together at the table and had a leisurely lunch, chatting and catching up over a good meal. After lunch, I continue to work, but at a slower pace. I took my time and didn't feel pressured to rush through my tasks. It was a welcome change of pace from the usual hustle and bustle of the office.
