There’s a moment in life when the ground shifts, when what once seemed solid and unbreakable cracks under the weight of reality. For some, it happens gradually, like the slow erosion of a shoreline, and for others, it comes in a sudden, devastating blow. No matter how it happens, the result is the same: a life irrevocably changed.
Emma had always been a planner. She had her life mapped out from an early age, down to the smallest details. The job, the house, the family—each piece fit neatly into place. She had worked hard for it all, and it seemed like life was on her side.
But life, as she would come to learn, has a way of defying even the best-laid plans. Just when everything seems to be falling into place, life throw a curve ball, shattering the illusion of control. It’s in those moments, when the unexpected arrives and the familiar path is suddenly obscured, that you realise life will never go according to plan. No matter how carefully you plan or how much effort you put in, there’s always something unforeseen to turn your world upside down. It’s the one certainty in life—that nothing is certain.
In the span of a year, everything started to change. First, her job was taken from her, a victim of downsizing in a company she'd given a decade of her life. The loss stung, but she convinced herself it was just a setback. She was qualified, experienced, and surely something better would come along. She poured her energy into job hunting, believing that if she worked hard enough, she'd find her way back.
As the months wore on, however, opportunities seemed to slip through her fingers. Rejections piled up, each one heavier than the last. Her savings dwindled, and the confidence she'd once had in abundance began to wane. She started to question everything she thought she knew about herself.
Just as she was beginning to adjust to the reality of her unemployment, life would again test her in ways she didn’t quite expected. Her marriage, once the cornerstone of her carefully planned life, began to show signs of strain. At first, it was subtle—a growing distance between her and her husband, Tom. He started coming home later from work, their conversations became more stilted, and the easy laughter they once shared was replaced by awkward silences.
Emma tried to chalk it up to the stress they were both under. She knew her unemployment had put pressure on their finances, and she assumed that Tom was simply overworked, trying to keep everything afloat. But deep down, a gnawing sense of unease began to take hold. The connection they once had, the one that had felt so strong and unbreakable, seemed to be fraying at the edges.
One evening, as Emma was sorting through another pile of rejected job applications, she found something that would shatter the remnants of her already fragile world—a text message on Tom’s phone, one that wasn’t meant for her. It was a message filled with words of affection and intimacy, but it wasn’t her name at the top. The truth was laid bare in that moment: Tom was having an affair.
The ground beneath her seemed to collapse. The man she had built a life with, the one she had trusted implicitly, had betrayed her. In the days that followed, Tom confessed to the affair. He tried to explain it away, citing the stress they were both under, but there was no excuse that could soften the blow.
Their marriage, already weakened by the weight of their collective struggles, began to crumble. Trust, once the foundation of their relationship, was irreparably broken. The conversations that followed were filled with anger, hurt, and sorrow. They both knew there was no going back, no way to rebuild what had been lost.
The decision to divorce, though painful, felt inevitable. Emma found herself once again facing the harsh reality that life doesn’t always follow the script you’ve written. The home they had built together was divided, their lives split in two. What was once a partnership became a bitter dissolution of everything they had once cherished.
In the quiet of her now empty home, Emma began to understand that survival wasn’t just about weathering a single storm—it was about enduring a series of them, each one testing her in ways she couldn’t have anticipated. And though the pain of her divorce was raw, she knew she had to keep moving forward, to find a way to survive even this. The life she had once planned was gone, but a new one was taking shape—one that might not be perfect, but was hers to create anew.
One evening, as she sat alone in her small apartment, Emma found herself staring at an old photo of her father. It was a candid shot, taken during a family vacation years ago. He was smiling, caught in a moment of pure joy. Looking at that photo, something inside her shifted.
Her father too had faced his own share of storms in life. He had lost loved ones, struggled with his own failures, and yet, he had always found a way to keep going. She realised she was not alone on this journey and that life was testing her to make her stronger. All these lessons had shown her the importance of resilience, of finding a way to survive even when the odds were stacked against you.
Emma realised then that surviving wasn’t about avoiding pain or pretending it didn’t exist. It was about finding the strength to keep moving forward, even when the path was uncertain. She couldn’t bring her marriage back, and she couldn’t undo the loss of her job. But she could choose how to face the remaining life that lay ahead.
Slowly, Emma began to rebuild. It wasn’t easy—nothing about it was. She allowed herself to grieve, to feel the full weight of her losses. But she also made a conscious decision to live. She reached out to her friends, accepting the support they had been offering. She started volunteering at a local shelter, using her time to help others who were struggling.
It wasn’t the life she had planned, but it was a life she could be proud of. Through the darkest days, she had found a way to survive, and in doing so, she had discovered a strength she hadn’t known she possessed.
Emma knew now that life would never be without its storms, and she had learned that the meaning of life wasn’t about avoiding the rain—it was about finding the courage to dance in it. And as long as she kept dancing, she knew she would be okay.
Adversity strikes everyone differently, but the common thread is that, in the end, we find a way. It might not be pretty, and it might not be easy, but survival is woven into the fabric of who we are. We endure, we adapt, and we continue on, carrying the scars of our battles, but also the strength that comes from facing them.

Life is always throwing adversity in my path. I get through it all the best I can. It definitely can wear us down. This is an important topic. Thank you for writing about it.
Am witnessing someone trying to endure, adapt and continue on. It isn’t easy but we truly are stronger than we give ourselves credit.
